Transcription: I bought an approved scheme of the noble art and mystery of stenography (which cost me ten and sixpence); and plunged into a sea of perplexity that brought me, in a few weeks, to the confines of distraction. The changes that were rung upon dots, which in such a position meant such a thing, and in such another position something else, entirely different; the wonderful vagaries that were played by circles; the unaccountable consequences that resulted from marks like flies’ legs; the tremendous effects of a curve in a wrong place; not only troubled my waking hours, but reappeared before me in my sleep. When I had groped my way, blindly, through these difficulties, and had mastered the alphabet, which was an Egyptian Temple in itself, there then appeared a procession of new horrors, called arbitrary characters; the most despotic characters I have ever known; who insisted, for instance, that a thing like the beginning of a cobweb, meant expectation, and that a pen-and-ink sky-rocket, stood for disadvantageous. When I had fixed these wretches in my mind, I found that they had driven everything else out of it; then, beginning again, I forgot them; while I was picking them up, I dropped the other fragments of the system; in short, it was almost heart-breaking.</text>

<text>Title: Traddles helps David improve his shorthand dictation skills, from chapter 38 of David Copperfield
Transcription: I resorted to Traddles for advice; who suggested that he should dictate speeches to me, at a pace, and with occasional stoppages, adapted to my weakness. Very grateful for this friendly aid, I accepted the proposal; and night after night, almost every night, for a long time, we had a sort of Private Parliament in Buckingham Street […] I should like to see such a Parliament anywhere else! My aunt and Mr. Dick represented the Government or the Opposition (as the case might be), and Traddles, with the assistance of Enfield’s Speakers, or a volume of parliamentary orations, thundered astonishing invectives against them. Standing by the table, with his finger in the page to keep the place, and his right arm flourishing above his head, Traddles, as Mr. Pitt, Mr. Fox, Mr. Sheridan, Mr. Burke, Lord Castlereagh, Viscount Sidmouth, or Mr. Canning, would work himself into the most violent heats, and deliver the most withering denunciations of the profligacy and corruption of my aunt and Mr. Dick; while I used to sit, at a little distance, with my notebook on my knee, fagging after him with all my might and main. […]
Often and often we pursued these debates until the clock pointed to midnight, and the candles were burning down. The result of so much good practice was, that by and by I began to keep pace with Traddles pretty well, and should have been quite triumphant if I had had the least idea what my notes were about. But, as to reading them after I had got them, I might as well have copied the Chinese inscriptions of an immense collection of tea-chests, or the golden characters on all the great red and green bottles in the chemists’ shops!</text>

Transcription: These lessons were great fun, though I found it was by no means an easy science to learn […] To take down a speech quickly and correctly you must have all your faculties in perfect order, and that is where I experienced a special difficulty in my own case. This arose from the kind of speeches which my father delivered for me to practise on, speeches which shortly reduced my mind to a state of wild confusion. They were of the character you would expect from a street tub orator or from a speaker on the hustings or a parody of orations in the House of Commons. These soon reduced me almost to a state of collapse in consequence of the laughter which followed on them; and when I say laughter, I mean laughter on the part of both of us. For he himself, tickled by the ridiculous nature of his own fancies, gave way to fits of laughter only equalled by wild bursts on my part. This part of my training was most amusing, but was not productive of much progress.</text>

Transcription: I once heard a story when I was living in Scotland from the mouth of a deceased judge which struck my imagination very forcibly. He told it by the dying light of a wood fire with a high wind roaring outside. I ought to premise that he had been counsel in an action that afterwards shared of the gains attending a will made by one of the wards. This is the story:
There were two old bachelor brothers of whom one reposed at Slough and the other at London. They were in the habit of visiting each other for a week or so at a time. It happened that the Slough brother, being on one of these visits to the London brother, felt rather unwell said ‘I will go home. My old housekeeper will help me. I shall soon be all right and will then come back. Once again they parted.
A few nights afterwards, the London brother being in bed and finding himself uncomfortable and unable to sleep, lighted a candle and composed himself to read. Suddenly the door of his room opened and an appearance of his brother, dressed in white, pale and looking very attentively at him. He spoke to the figure but it made no answer. So it passed on to the end of the room turned and went out at the door. The London brother’s immediate impression was that his mind was ill, had some fullness of blood in the region of the brain and had best be bled. So he put on his dressing gown to call up his servant., he heard the sound of a carriage in the street which came over and stopped at his door. On his opening the window and asking who was there, he was answered ‘A messenger to take you to your brother who is very ill and supposed to be dying.’
Of course, he accompanied the messenger instantly. When he arrived in his brother’s room, there were several people present. On sight of them all, the brother rose in his bed with difficulty and spoke these words: ‘John, you have seen me before tonight and you know it!’
With that, he fell back on his pillow and never spoke another word.</text>

              <text>Title: Nelson
Transcription: There are some circumstances connected with the death of Nelson which are always interesting as having in them a kind of alternative picture of the events of the day. Thus when the Admiral persists in his usual courtly custom of dressing himself in full uniform with gold lace, silk stockings and God knows what orders and decorations, he is warned by his officers most emphatically that his life is particularly sought by the French and that he exposes himself to very great danger. It is represented to him that the enemy has a new custom of carrying riflemen in the tops of his ships and that by making himself conspicuous to the meanest observation as the Admiral of the Fleet, he hazards his safety and, necessarily with it, the fortune of the day. Apart from these representations no man can better know the real extent of the danger of such a practice than the great man to whom they were made because it is a fact in his history that he had always opposed himself to this use of the rifle as cowardly and cruel. Nevertheless he persists, is shot in the back and is killed. After he has been taken below in a dying state the old quarter master on board the Victory who is standing on the poop by the wheel says to a midshipman that there is a man in a blouse whom he has seen hiding on the main top of the ship to which the Victory is lashed yard arm to yard arm who fired at and struck down the Admiral as he saw with his eyes. During the remainder of the progress of the fight the two men watch for this man. In the moment of his emerging from behind some concealment of rigging or sail the quarter master points up and cries out “There he is”. In the same moment the quarter master falls shot by the same man through the mouth. In the same moment the midshipman fires and is so convinced that he has hit the man that as soon as possible after the battle is over he climbs onto that main top to see. Sure enough there he finds the man lying dead with a ball in his heart.
It is a circumstance not belonging to this story but not un-BLANK of the delicacy or want of delicacy of the time that Nelson’s body was said to have been conveyed to Gibraltar in a cask of rum and that any really or pretendedly choice rum offered on the market for a long time afterwards was called 'The Admiral'. But it is easier to transmit the weaknesses and grimness of men’s bodies than the worth of their souls and so a tale of fiction may have had some foundation of truth in it.</text>
